With the government announcing lockdown relaxations gradually, the food inspectors intend to visit sweet stalls and bakeries to ensure compliance of the order. “The exercise of serving notices to the sweetshops and bakeries across the district has begun. Also, we are planning to create awareness among the mithaiwalas about the food safety standards they have to follow. Cases will be booked against those who fail to comply with the order,” M Koteswara Rao, Food Safety Officer, GVMC. In Visakhapatnam, there are about 400 to 500 small to big sweet outlets. There is no mechanism to monitor the date of manufacturing of the sweets at the counters, especially the ones kept on the trays and in large containers. Continued on Page 7 Visakhapatnam: Sweet sellers will now have to display the manufacturing date and best before date labels of their products along with the price tags. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) exhort shop owners to comply with the new labelling and make sure that the products they sell do not pose any potential risk to the customers after consumption. The move comes in the wake of multiple instances of selling stale and expired sweets to the customers. The FSSAI issued orders for the ‘mithaiwalas’ to exhibit best before date and date of manufacturing a few months before. Oslo/Geneva: The United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for its efforts to combat hunger around the world and improve conditions for peace in areas affected by conflict. The Rome-based organisation says it helps some 97 million people in about 88 countries each year, and that one in nine people worldwide still do not have enough to eat. “The need for international solidarity and multilateral cooperation is more conspicuous than ever,” Berit Reiss-Andersen, chairwoman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, told a news conference. She called the WFP a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict, and said the Covid-19 pandemic, which the WFP says could double hunger worldwide, had made it even more relevant. “Until the day we have a medical vaccine, food is the best vaccine against chaos,” the Nobel committee said in its citation. “There is an estimate within the World Food Programme that ... there will be 265 million starving people within a year, so of course this is also a call to the international community not to underfund the World Food Programme.” WFP runs a logistics service that has dispatched medical cargoes to over 120 countries throughout the pandemic to help governments and health partners fighting Covid-19. It also has provided passenger services to ferry humanitarian and health workers where commercial flights were unavailable. “At a time when we are living through a global pandemic, the need for food, humanitarian help has intensified,” Reiss-Andersen told Reuters. India is among the 86 countries with which Switzerland's Federal Tax Administration (FTA) has exchanged information on financial accounts within the framework of global standards on AEOI this year. India had received the first set of details from Switzerland in September 2019 under AEOI (Automatic Exchange of Information), when it involved 75 countries. The information ex- change this year involved nearly 3.1 million (31 lakh) financial accounts, FTA said in a statement on Friday. The number of such accounts was similar in 2019. While the statement did not explicitly name India among the 86 countries, officials said that India is among the prominent countries with which Switzerland has shared details about financial accounts of clients of Swiss banks and various other financial institutions. The officials further said a "sizeable number" relates to Indian citizens and entities in the overall exchange of information about over three million financial accounts by Switzerland this year with 86 countries. Continued on Page 7 Changes in H1B will attract best minds: US Washington: The changes to the US H1B foreign workers visa will help attract the best and the brightest minds from across the world, a top US official said on Thursday. The new interim final rules published on Thursday by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of Labour (DL) narrows down the definition of “specialty occupation”. It requires companies to make “real” offers to “real employees” by plugging loopholes and preventing the “displacement” of the American workers. The H1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. “I just reject their premise that this will somehow get in the way of bringing the best and the brightest,” Acting Homeland Security Deputy Ken Cuccinelli told Fox Business in an interview on Thursday. The Department of Labour regulation will raise those wage requirements for these high-tech workers and will make Americans more competitive. He said low-paid foreign workers who undercut Americans and depress wages would be screened. The regulations by the DHS will stop third-party companies from subcontracting out H-1B employees. “This is where you hear the horror stories of Disney and AT&T and the TVA where Americans have to train their foreign replacements. Well, that is coming to an end under President Donald Trump with this set of regulations,” Cuccinelli said. Representing top technology companies from the Silicon Valley, the FWD.US, a pro-immigration lobby group, alleged the new rules will be implemented without consideration of American people’s comment. “The Trump Administration continues to do everything it can to make it harder for immigrants to contribute to their families, communities, and economy. These policies are yet another roadblock for US businesses to hire critically needed workers with specialised skills,” said Todd Schulte. “Because these rules impose obligations completely disconnected from real world labour markets, many immigrants who have lived in the country for years may now be unable to extend their status here, while international graduates of US colleges and universities will be unable to change status here to work and will thus have no choice but to leave the country, taking their US education and training with them,” he said.
