Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu doubled the monthly pension of old-aged persons, widows and others from the existing Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000. The new pension will come into effect from January. The increased pension of Rs 1,000 for the month of January would be paid during February totalling Rs 3,000 and from March onwards Rs 2,000 would be paid regularly. According to the Chief Minister, this will beneﬁt 24,22,444 oldaged persons, 20,13,808 widows, 6,41,820 physically-challenged, 1,07,992 weavers, 28,011 toddy tappers, 32,979 HIV patients, 1,665 transgenders, 45,358 ﬁshermen, 1,12,471 single women and 8,044 dialysis patients totalling 54,14,592. Transgenders and those having more than 80 per cent disability, who are getting Rs 1,500 at present, will now get Rs 3,000 as pension. This includes the increased new pension of more than 3.5 lakh sanctioned during the present Janmabhoomi programme. Despite ﬁnancial crisis due to bifurcation of the state and noncooperation from the Centre, the Chief Minister said that the state government was committed to the welfare of poor. Describing CHANDRAYAAN-2 IN MARCH-APRIL Isro to send Indians to space by Dec 2021 Bengaluru: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday said it would send astronauts to space by December 2021. Addressing a press conference, ISRO Chief K Sivan said that the preparations for Gaganyaan Mission are underway and it will prove to be a major turnaround for India's space agency. In his Independence Day speech last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced about the Gaganyaan project, saying that India would send an astronaut to space in the year 2022."When India celebrates 75th year of Independence in 2022, and if possible even before, an Indian son or daughter will undertake a manned space mission on board 'Gaganyaan' carrying the national ﬂag," the PM had said. If India successfully launch the mission, it would be the fourth nation to do so after the United States, Russia and China. "The initial training for Gaganyaan will be done in India and advanced training maybe in Russia. Women astronauts will be there on the team. That's our aim," ISRO chief was quoted as saying. "We will set up six incubation and research centres across the country. We will bring the Indian students to ISRO. Why do the Indian students need to go to NASA?" said ISRO chief. ISRO aims to deploy its biggest rocket, the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III), to send the astronauts into space from the Sriharikota space port in Andhra Pradesh. Sivan said that the government has allotted Rs 30,000 crore for the organisation's activities of which Rs 10,000 crore has been cleared by the cabinet for the Gaganyaan programme under which three Indian astronauts will be sent to space for up to seven days by 2022. Discussing about the progress of the Chandrayaan-2 mission, he said that the second moon mission will be lunched around March-April this year as it missed the January-February launch window. Last year, ISRO completed 16 missions, signing off with 7 successful missions, which included two successful GSLV missions in a single year. Shah pitches for mandir New Delhi: BJP chief Amit Shah on Friday said his party is committed to construct Ram mandir in Ayodhya. “BJP wants Ram Mandir to be constructed at the earliest. We are trying in the Supreme Court that the case reaches its conclusion, but the Congress is trying to create obstacles. Continued on Page 15 New Delhi: Barely a day after being sacked from the post of CBI director unceremoniously by a selection panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Alok Verma resigned from the Indian Police Service on Friday. In a letter to DoPT Secretary Chandramouli, Verma said, “The selection committee has not provided the undersigned an opportunity to explain the details as recorded by the CVC before arriving at the decision. “Natural justice was scuttled, and the entire process was turned upside down in ensuring that the undersigned is removed from the post of the Director CBI.” The former CBI director said that he “would have already superannuated as on July 31, 2017” and “has already crossed his superannuation age for DG, Fire Services, Civil Defence & Home Guards. Accordingly, he may be deemed as superannuated with effect from Friday.” Continued on Page 15 CBI No 2 Asthana faces arrest Vijayawada Jn to have dozen platforms OUR BUREAU Vijayawada: The Vijayawada railway station, one of the busiest junctions, is all set to cross another milestone. The rail junction, which connects south to the west coast up to West Bengal, will get two more platforms taking the total number to twelve. Presently, the Vijayawada railway station has ten platforms on par with the Secunderabad railway station. Now, the Vijayawada station will have more platforms than Secunderabad. With this Vijayawada station will become the second busiest railway junction in the country after the Chatrapathi Sivaji station in Mumbai which has 18 platforms. The station serves 1.4 lakh passengers daily with nearly 500 express, passenger and goods trains passing through the junction. The construction work for the two new platforms would begin soon, according to officials. The railways has initially sanctioned Rs 10 crore to establish the two new platforms. The officials have prepared plans to remove structures on platforms No 6 and 7. Currently, several ofﬁces, including chief ticket inspector office, Railway Protection Force and other commercial buildings are functioning from these two platforms. The offices would be shifted to another location soon. n CM TO LAY FOUNDATION STONE FOR BRIDGE TODAY Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will lay the foundation stone for an iconic bridge and water treatment plant at Pavitra Sangamam at Ibrahimpatnam in Krishna district on Saturday. The iconic bridge will be the main entry point from north direction to Amaravati capital city. The bridge will connect Amaravati capital city with Krishna district. The state government has made plans to lay the foundation stone for the bridge on the River Krishna on the auspicious day of Vijaya Dasami but it was postponed due to various reasons. The bridge will connect the Hyderabad New Delhi: A day after the ouster of Alok Verma, M Nageshwar Rao, additional director, on Friday took charge of the office of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director. Soon after assuming the charge, Rao cancelled all transfer decisions taken by Alok Verma during his recent two-day tenure as the agency chief. New Delhi: Rakesh Asthana, the CBI Number 2, will be investigated in the bribery case against him, the Delhi High Court said on Friday. The judge refused to cancel the case filed against Special Director Rakesh Asthana, CBI Deputy Superintendent Devender Kumar and alleged middleman Manoj Prasad, and also removed the interim protection given to Asthana against criminal proceedings. The CBI has been told to complete investigation in the case against Asthana and others within 10 weeks. Hyderabad-based businessman Sathish Babu Sana, on whose complaint the FIR was filed, alleged he paid bribe to get relief in a money laundering case involving meat exporter Moin Qureshi. This will reduce traffic load on Vijayawada. The L&T Company will construct the 3.2-km, six-lane bridge and the project would cost Rs 1387 crore. The bridge is estimated to be completed in two years. Now the government wants to construct the bridge with tourism attractions. Already, the government developed the iconic bridge's starting point in the name of Pavitra Sangamam at Ibrahimpatnam. The bridge will also connect the historical Kondapalli fort with Amaravati. The government is giving utmost priority to its construction as it has assumed signiﬁcance in many ways. Now, insurance bonanza likely for small traders New Delhi: Ahead of the general election, the Union government is considering an insurance scheme for lakhs of GST-registered small and medium scale traders with a view to address certain concerns of this segment. According to sources, the scheme may provide accidental insurance cover on the lines of Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) for the traders at an affordable premium.
