Kevadia: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, dedicated to the nation the 182-metre statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, believed to be the tallest in the world and said it will be a reminder about the courage of a man who thwarted efforts to disintegrate India. In his speech, Modi stressed that the statue would generate immense employment opportunities for the local tribals living near the dam in Narmada district. Gujarat's Governor OP Kohli, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and BJP chief Amit Shah were also present at the unveiling of the Statue of Unity. Modi described the Statue of Unity as a symbol of the country's engineering and technical capabilities. To welcome visitors, the Gujarat government has not only built a 3-star hotel, shopping centre and a research centre in the Sardar Patel statue com- plex but has also built high-speed elevators that will take you to a height of about 400 feet through the core of the statue where you can get a panoramic view of the surroundings. What is unique about the statue? Apart from being the world's tallest statue, it also holds the distinction of being among the fastest to be completed -just 34 months unlike China's Spring Temple Buddha which took 11 years. The work began on December 19, 2015. The imposing monument is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in the US and is built on an islet, Sadhu Bet, around 3.5 km downstream from the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat's Narmada district. The best way to reach Sadhu Bet island is to take a boat ride. SC seeks Rafale pricing info in sealed cover in 10 days New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Centre for pricing details of the 36 Rafale fighter jets India is buying from France in a sealed envelope within 10 days but agreed that "strategic and confidential" information need not be disclosed. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, gave some more leeway to the government which has been arguing that pricing details are so sensitive that they have not even been shared with Parliament. The Centre must bring details of the decisionmaking process of the deal into the public domain, except those that are confidential and have strategic importance, the court said. The bench said the information must be shared by the government within 10 days and the petitioners could respond to it in the next seven days. Calls Congress and TDP as Telangana traitors Hyderabad: TRS leader KT Rama Rao called upon the people of the state to think and vote in the coming elections as these votes would decide the future of the state. Rama Rao spent a busy day on Wednesday campaigning in Gambhiraopet mandal in Sircilla constituency from where he is contesting in the upcoming elections. Rama Rao said that the people should be wary of ‘Mayakutami’ which has nurtured a conspiracy to stall the progress and development in the infant State. But, a vote for the Congress party will bring dark days back into the state.” Rao reminded the villagers that Telangana was the only state in the country which provided uninterrupted power supply to the agriculture sector. “On one hand Congress files cases on irrigation projects in the state and on the other hand, Chandrababu Naidu writes letters to the Centre asking them not to give permission for irrigation projects in Telangana. He will be in Delhi on Thursday rubbing shoulders with big names at the national level Rahul Gandhi, Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav. The agenda is to “Save the Nation” by crafting a coalition calculus of parties with disparate ideologies that would stand up to the NDA at the time of reckoning. The leaders of the parties want to fly the trial balloon of the coalition in the forthcoming elections to four North Indian states and Telangana and see what results it would deliver. The non-BJP parties that are showing interest to come together have nothing in common but what is uniting them is their visceral hatred for the BJP. The Assembly elections to the five states are expected to set the trend for the final Armageddon in May when the nation would go to elections. Naidu, known for his managerial skills in getting parties on one side despite their internal contradictions, is taking a lead in positioning the antiBJP forces in the battle-field. Continued on Page 4 RIFT WITH GOVT RBI governor Urjit may quit New Delhi: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Urjit Patel may consider resigning from his post given a breakdown in relations with the Union government, indicate several reports on Wednesday, sparking a sell-off in the rupee and bonds. The government has invoked never-before-used powers under the RBI Act that allow it to issue directions to the central bank governor on matters of public interest, says a report. It said the government had sent letters to the RBI governor in recent weeks exercising powers under section 7 of the RBI Act on issues ranging from liquidity for non-bank finance companies, capital requirements for weak banks and lending to small-and medium-sized companies. Section 7 says that ‘the Central government may from time to time give such directions to the bank as it may, after consultation with the governor of the bank, consider necessary in the public interest’, a statute that has not been used in independent India. However, a senior trader at a foreign bank said it is difficult to believe that the RBI governor will resign because it is ‘unprecedented and would look quite irresponsible and (an) immature step’.
