Won’t interfere with HC order on Karti bail: SC New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday declined to interfere with a Delhi High Court order granting bail to Karti Chidambaram, son of former Union minister P Chidambaram, for alleged financial irregularities in the INX Media case. When it comes to the question of liberty, the courts do not go into technicality, a bench of Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said. The bench said it is not interfering with the bail granted to Karti Chidambaram but was leaving the question of law open -- on whether he can approach the high court when his application for bail was already pending before the trial court. Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CBI, said this question of law has to be kept open as invoking powers of concurrent jurisdiction of high court may be a case of "forum shopping". Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Karti Chidambaram, said there is already a judgement in which concurrent jurisdiction of high court can be invoked. On June 25, 9 labourers die in Kurnool quarry blast the CBI moved the apex court challenging the high court order granting bail to the businessman. SC junks plea on cesarean deliveries New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea seeking laying down of guidelines on how the procedure for cesarean deliveries has to be conducted in hospitals, saying the petition was an abuse of process of law. A bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi also slapped a cost of Rs 25,000 on the petitioner and directed him to deposit the amount within four weeks with the Supreme Court Bar Association. “What is that you want? How much cost will you pay, you tell us? You want the court to lay down guidelines as to how cesarean deliveries have to be done? Is it a PIL (Public Interest Litigation),” the bench, comprising jus- Fines petitioner `25,000 for abuse of process of law tices R Banumathi and Navin Sinha, said. “Having perused the PIL, we are of the view that the same is an abuse of process of law,” the bench added. The petition was filed by Reepak Kansal, who had alleged “flagrant violations and abuse of health norms” due to a lack of policy and claimed that several private hospitals and maternity homes often conduct unnecessary C-section deliveries to make money. Kansal also said that the World Health Organisation recommends caesarean section to be performed only when it becomes a medical necessity. He claimed there are numerous instances in India where Csections are performed without medical reasons by private hospitals with an intention to make money. His petition also claimed that a Csection delivery involves an extended stay in the hospital as compared to normal childbirth. Continued on P6 Tirupati: A la Narendra Modi, who captured the imagination of the youth and students ahead of 2014 general elections, AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is also focusing his attention on this vital constituency, by kick-starting student-centric programmes Gnana Bheri in the temple town on Saturday. As Gujarat Chief Minister, Modi had addressed the students of SRCC of Delhi University in 2013, talking about the need to lift pessimism that had permeated everyone. By saying so, he left no one among the youth in doubt that he was gunning for the Prime Minister’s gaddi. With media launching a massive blitzkrieg in his support, Modi set the nation on fire. Though AP government’s Gana Bheri looks outwardly similar to various students’ conclaves that Modi addressed subsequently, it is different in appearance and character as it is expected to be culmination of students’ activities going on for the last few days in the district. They would perform before Naidu who in turn would help broaden their vision of what to expect when they step out of their college. Maybe, his address would be more like the famed Steve Jobs’ Stanford University Commencement Address in 2005. The government is planning similar Gnana Bheris in other districts too where Naidu would interact with students and fill them with hope for future. According to sources, Gnana Bheri is aimed at helping the youths acquire global competitiveness. Efforts are on to ramp up the pace to a fitting finale on Saturday when Naidu, as chaperon and guide, would officiate the celebrations. Several competitions in culture, sports, academics and innovations have been held as a prelude to the main event and the selected candidates will get the chance of shaking hands with the CM.
