His win takes India's medal tally to six, which includes three other golds, one silver and one bronze medal, all in weightlifting. He further became the ﬁrst Indian to win gold in the 85 kg weight category at the Games. This Jagan’s mom to join MPs on fast today OUR BUREAU New Delhi: The indeﬁnite hunger strike by ﬁve YSRC MPs in Andhra Bhavan demanding Special Status Category entered second day on Saturday. The MPs are continuing with their fast in the corridors of the Bhavan as the tents that were erected specially for the purpose collapsed due to strong winds and rain on Friday evening. Of the ﬁve fasting MPs, Nellore MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy fell ill. His blood pressure levels ﬂuctuated, and he vomited. The doctors shifted him to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital. YSRCP MLAs and MLCs also came to Delhi and expressed solidarity with the fasting MPs. On Sunday, mother of Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, Y S Vijayalakshmi, will call on the fasting MPs and will participate in the deeksha. CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury was among the leaders who visited Andhra Bhavan to extend his support to YSRC party legislators on the second day of the fast. Addressing the YSRC party members present there, Yechury said he was not visiting them "to get appreciation. This is our duty and responsibility." On the day the bill to bifurcate the state came to Parliament, he had asked about sharing of electricity, water and government employees. But there was no answer. He said amidst din in the Rajya Sabha, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave an assurance that the Special Status would be given to Andhra Pradesh for ﬁve years. Reacting to it, the then Rajya Sabha member M Venkaiah Naidu demanded that the SCS be given for 10 years and said that if the Congress government fails to do so, the BJP which would come to power would extend the period of SCS to ten years. Continued on Page 4 DELHI AIR QUALITY 7,000 buses booked for ﬂouting pollution norms New Delhi: Over 7,000 buses, a majority from neighbouring states, were booked for ﬂouting pollution norms in the national capital in the last six years, the Delhi government informed the state Assembly on Saturday. A total of 7,219 buses were challaned for not having valid pollution under check (PUC) certiﬁcates, from 2012-13 till February 2018, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said during the ongoing session of the Assembly. The highest number of buses, 3,328, that were challaned for the lack of valid PUC certiﬁcates, came from Uttar Pradesh, followed by 2,064 from Rajasthan. The number of buses registered in Delhi that were challaned for violating pollution norms, was 643, during the period.According to the minister, action against buses causing pollution picked up manifold in last one year. A total of 5,086 buses were challaned for lacking valid PUC certiﬁcates, from 2017-till February this year.The number was quite low in the previous years -- 244 in 2012-13, 216 in 2013-14, 506 in 2014-15, 189 in 2015-16,.and 978 in 2016-17, he said in a written reply.The enforcement wing of the Transport Department carries out regular checks of pollution standards of the buses coming to Delhi from neighbouring states. Buses not having valid PUC certiﬁcates are challaned, the minister said. The ﬁne for not having a valid PUC is Rs 1,000. The State Transport Authority of Delhi has no power to cancel permits of buses from other states violating norms in the city under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. meeting also sought the cooperation from all stakeholders to support government’s initiatives in peacefully taking forward the protests.The meeting was of the strong opinion that they should resort to street protests with public participation. The employees’ union president Ashok Babu and Anuradha of Electricity employees association assured the party full support and cooperation in the struggle for SCS. Ashok Babu suggested that joint action committee be formed and this committee should campaign against BJP in Karnataka where the Assembly elections would be held. While ﬁve YSRCP MPs sat on fast at AP Bhavan in New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed his party MPs to stay put in Delhi for some more time. According to TDPP leader C M Ramesh, they would meet the President of India and submit a memorandum explaining how the Centre had failed to implement the assurances given in the AP State Reorganisation Act 2014 even four years after the bifurcation of the state which forced them to quit the NDA. The MPs will submit documents to prove their charge that the Centre had ‘cheated’ the people of Andhra Pradesh. During the teleconference Naidu had with the MPs on Saturday morning, one of the MPs felt that they should also try to meet the Prime Minister to demand special category status to the state. Naidu said that a decision on this would be taken after reviewing the developments at the party’s politburo meeting to be held soon. Meanwhile, the TDP MPs have been asked to come up with an action plan of activities that need to be taken up in Delhi to put pressure on the Centre. Back in the state, the TDP will intensify protests across the state and would adopt innovative ways to register their protest demanding SCS. Continued on Page 4 Shock waves in Tollywood: 3 linked with drugs OUR BUREAU Hyderabad: Investigation into the sensational drugs racket, which has exposed the underbelly of glamour world of Tollywood in 2017, has reached the ﬁnal stage. A few of the prominent names from the cine industry, including a director and two actors ﬁgured in the fresh charge-sheet. The names of the trio will be revealed shortly. The Department of Excise and Prohibition has tightened the noose around these three individuals against whom four charge-sheets were ﬁled. The development comes in the light of Forensic Science Lab (FSL) reports which nailed down the trio whose samples were found to contain traces of narcotic substance. The lab report of two of these is said to have already been submitted to the court. It may be mentioned here that the Excise officials busted a major drug racket in the beginning of July 2017. The investigation into the drug racket led to questioning of celebrities of Tollywood for the ﬁrst time. Puri Jagannadh, Charmee Kaur, Ravi Teja, cinematographer Shyam K Naidu, Tarun, Mumaith Khan, Tanish, singer Ananda Krishna Nandu, art director Chinna N Dharmarao and Navdeep were amongst the well-known faces that came under the scanner of excise authorities. Excise officers, who issued notices to these celebrities, summoned and questioned following information provided by drug-peddlers.According to the latest reports, out of the nearly dozen samples of Tollywood personalities that were sent for forensic lab, by Excise Department, three were tested positive. The Excise officials, however, remained tightlipped in revealing the names of the celebrities against who charge-sheet has been ﬁled. Till now, 22 persons were arrested in 12 cases, while 62 persons, including personalities linked to Tollywood were questioned.
