The policy-making body of the tax department issued an order extending the deadline from the current last date of March 31. The order said the deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking for filing I-T returns is being extended after "consideration of the matter". It is understood that the latest order by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has come in the backdrop of the Supreme Court, earlier this month, directing extension of the March 31 deadline for linking Aadhaar with various other services. Continued on Page 6 POLL DATE LEAK EC forms panel, may seek CBI probe New Delhi: Hours after a controversy erupted over BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya tweeting the Karnataka election dates ahead of Election Commission’s official announcement, ECI constituted a Committee of Officers to probe the matter. Meanwhile, sources said the EC is likely to seek a CBI and Intelligence Bureau (IB) probe into the incident. In a statement, the commission said the panel would give its report within seven days. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at a meeting of all political parties and organisations in Velagapudi on Tuesday them to rise above their political considerations and wage a united battle since the interests of the state were at stake. The Chief Minister told the delegates that he would meet all the leaders at Delhi and intensify the agitation which he had started for Special Category Status and the assurances made in the AP State Reorganisation Act. Power tariffs left untouched n Nurseries recognised as agriculture; to get free electricity OUR BUREAU Hyderabad: The AP Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC), in its power tariff order for Andhra Pradesh for 201819, left untouched existing power tariff for various categories of consumers, besides providing relief to certain categories. For 2017-18, the APERC gave an order hiking power tariff by DISCOMS TOLD TO GO SLOW ON PRESS ARREARS T he APERC has asked the Discoms to go slow in penalising the printing presses in AP for not paying revised tariff since 2011-12. According to APERC chairman G Bhavani Prasad, though printing presses were brought under LT II commercial category in 2011-12, the Discoms continued to charge them at the tariff that was in force prior to 2011-12. At that time the printing presses were in LT III industrial category where tariff used to be a little less. But for some reasons not clearly known, Bhavani Prasad said, the Discoms collected charges at the old tariff and now they were serving notices on them to pay arrears in lumpsum. 1.98 per cent. Of the 1.59 crore electricity consumers in the state, 1.44 crore were spared from the tariff hike then. For the new ﬁnancial year (2018-19), the Aggregate Revenue Requirement (ARR) and Filings for Proposed Tariffs (FPT) of both distribution companies – Eastern and Southern – projected a deﬁcit of Rs 7,983 crore but the APERC estimated that the deﬁcit was only Rs 6,030 crore which the state government had consented to bear. By slashing the deﬁcit, the APERC has reduced the burden on the state Rs 1,953 crore. Continued on Page 6 AMRUT water a far cry for Tirupati residents K NETHAJI Tirupati: Residents of temple city were elated when the Centre has selected Tirupati under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme to improve water supply network. But alas! Leave alone water supply, the scheme has been giving nightmares to the citizens for nearly six months. The intended pipeline network has damaged the existing road networks making the lives of pedestrians as well as vehicle-users a hell. The water system programme, which was sanctioned by the Government of India under AMRUT scheme to improve the water supply pipeline network in the temple city in 2016-17 financial year, is going on at a slow pace hampering the smooth flow of traffic. The Central government • `80 crore worth pipeline works started six months ago • So far at least 50% of the digging not yet completed • Dug up roads causing inconvenience to locals has sanctioned around Rs 80 crore for the water supply programme. A technical flaw in the deal has made the contractor halt all the pipeline laying works putting residents to further trouble. The pipeline works has reached up to MA Palli area.
