"Philippines, India and the Mal- dives are among the worst regional offenders in this respect. These countries score high for corruption and have fewer press freedoms and higher numbers of journalist deaths," it added. In the last six years, 15 journalists working on corruption stories in these countries were murdered, as reported by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). In the latest ranking New Zealand and Denmark were placed the highest, with scores of 89 and 88, respectively. On the other hand Syria, South Sudan and Somalia were ranked lowest with scores of 14, 12 and 9, respectively. India worse than China, better than Pakistan New Delhi: India has been ranked worse than China and Bhutan in terms of 'corruption perception', but fares better than its other neighbours, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, according to Transperency International. The index, which ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption, placed India at the 81st place. In the 2016 India was in the 79th place among 176 countries. The index uses a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean. India's score in the latest ranking, however, remained unchanged at 40. In 2015, the score was 38. P13 ing countries, Pakistan was ranked at the 117th place with a score of 32, Bangladesh at 143th (score of 28), Myanmar at 130th (score 30) and Sri Lanka 91st (score 38). Bhutan has the best score of 67 among India's neighbours and has been placed high on the index at the 26th place. China also fared better than India with a rank of 77 and score of 41. Meanwhile, China with a score of 41 was ranked 77th on the list, while Brazil was placed at 96th with a score of 37 and Russia was at the 135th place with a score of 29. The analysis, which incorporates data from CPJ, showed that in the last six years, 9 out of 10 journalists were killed in countries that score 45 or less on the index. "No activist or reporter should have to fear for their lives when speaking out against corruption. Continued on Page 6 `1,200-crore SEZ unit of Gitanjali in Hyd attached New Delhi: The Income Tax Department on Thursday said it has attached a Rs 1,200-crore worth property of the Gitanjali group, located in a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Hyderabad, in connection with its tax evasion probe. The officials said the property has been provisionally attached under the Income Tax law and the action was taken to "recover outstanding tax demands". They said the valuation of the property, in the SEZ at Rs 1,200 crore, has been done by the assessee and the department has put up a notice on the property. The department, in the last few days, has similarly attached nine bank accounts and seven properties of the group and Choksi. The department had ﬁrst raided billionaire diamond jeweller Nirav Modi in January last year on charges of alleged tax evasion and had also surveyed Gitanjali Gems promoter Choksi's businesses. Modi, Choksi and others are being investigated by multiple probe agencies after it recently came to light, following a complaint by the Punjab National Bank.
